A cold wind is coming up. Tomorrow is the [Feast of Embers|Calendar]. [Maddin's Day|Calendar] celebrating the founder of [Altara] is two days later and the [Feast of the Half Moon|Calendar] is the following night.[1] The coaches reach the river. During the ride, [Reanne|Reanne Corly], [Tamarla] and [Janira] told [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] and [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] what red flowers on the basket mean and she is angry at [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] gets even angrier and tells her it was really [Tylin|Tylin Quintara]. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] is almost hysterical with laughter and embarrassment. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] offers her the [foxhead medallion|Foxhead Medallion]. She is overwhelmed, but makes him keep it. She says that [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] feels a storm coming and she does not mean this wind.[2] [Harnan] and [Tad Kandel], [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]'s men, are there. [Vanin|Chel Vanin] is unhappy as he gets seasick. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] is starting to feel responsible and worries about it. 

They board two boats, [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] and the women on one and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and the rest of the men on the other. In the [Rahad], they pass a grimy inn, [The Golden Crown of Heaven]. They arrive at the [six-story building|Ebou Dar]. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] was right about the number of floors.[3] [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] sends [Harnan] and half the [Redarms|Band of the Red Hand] to guard the back. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] runs up stairs with [Vanin|Chel Vanin] and the [Kin] except for [Sumeko|Sumeko Karistovan] and [Ieine] who stay with [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara]. [Beslan], [Nalesean|Nalesean Aldiaya], [Corevin] and four other men stay with [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. 

[Falion|Falion Bhoda] and [Ispan|Ispan Shefar] enter with two dozen men and shield [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara]. [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] knocks them down and a fight starts. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] is no longer shielded. There is a scream from upstairs. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] runs up. Everyone is knocked down. The %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% breaks [Janira]'s neck while men pry open the door at the end of the hall. The %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% throws [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. [Nalesean|Nalesean Aldiaya] appears but the %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% rips out his throat. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] jumps on the %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% and stabs him but there is no effect. The %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% tells [Mat|Matrim Cauthon], "He wants you dead as much as he wants her." The [foxhead medallion|Foxhead Medallion] falls on the %%ot [gholam]'s%% face and burns him. He pulls out the dagger and throws it at [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] who catches it. There is no blood on it. The men are carrying stuff from the room at the end of the hall.[4] The %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% goes for [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] but [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] waves the [foxhead medallion|Foxhead Medallion] at him. The %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%% retreats into a side room and disappears. 

[Elayne|Elayne Trakand] thanks [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] for saving her and apologizes again. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] cannot [Heal|Weaves#h] [Reanne|Reanne Corly]. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] comes upstairs and starts to work on [Tamarla]. [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] and [Sumeko|Sumeko Karistovan] arrive. [Sumeko|Sumeko Karistovan] heals [Reanne|Reanne Corly] using [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] type healing. [Ieine] is shielding [Ispan|Ispan Shefar]. At the front of the house, [Beslan], [Fergin], [Gorderan] and [Metwyn] are still alive. At the back of building, only [Harnan] survived the %%ot [gholam]'s%% exit. [Mendair|Lawdrin Mendair] is killed. [Reanne|Reanne Corly] and [Tamarla] are okay. Two [Kin] and six [Redarms|Band of the Red Hand] are dead.[5] [Sibella] and [Famelle|Famelle Juarde] are okay but [Melore] is dead. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] finds the [Bowl of the Winds] and lots of other stuff and they start carrying it out.
