[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and the [Band of the Red Hand] have been traveling through [Altara] for three days. [Olver] rides the horse [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] gave him.[1] It is still hot despite being less than one month to the [Feast of Lights|Calendar]. The second night out [Olver] tried to kill [Aviendha] for being [Aiel]. He seems to make [Aviendha] uneasy.[2] [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] is worried because he thinks [Aviendha] intends to kill [Elayne|Elayne Trakand]. [Vanin|Chel Vanin] returns from scouting. Two of his men, [Mar] and [Ladwin], were captured by [Warders]. He reports that there are maybe three hundred [Aes Sedai] in [Salidar]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] is angry because [Rand|Rand alThor] told him to expect only fifty. There is also an army twice the size of the [Band of the Red Hand].[3] [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] orders [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde], [Nalesean|Nalesean Aldiaya] and [Daerid|Daerid Ondin] to halt and set up defenses. He leaves [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] in charge and heads off with [Aviendha], [Vanin|Chel Vanin] and two bannermen.[4] 

They reach [Salidar] early that afternoon. There are no flies in [Salidar].[5] [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] spots a golden-haired woman who looks familiar.[6] He stops and asks a thin, dark haired [Aes Sedai][7] about [Egwene|Egwene alVere], [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] and [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara]. She takes him to the [Little Tower|Salidar]. [Anaiya] comes up bringing [Nicola|Nicola Treehill] to look at [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. She says she can see a glow around [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. [Anaiya] is delighted that she has discovered a [Talent|Weaves], seeing that he is %%ot [ta'veren|Wheel of Time]%%. Another [Aes Sedai], an [Illianer|Illian (Country)] with a bony face and brown hair,[7] asks [Aviendha] about [channeling|True Source]. Pretty soon she is surrounded by [Aes Sedai] and looking harried.

[Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] comes to the door and leads [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] to a room in the [Little Tower|Salidar] where [Egwene|Egwene alVere] and [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] are waiting. [Egwene|Egwene alVere] wears the [Amyrlin|Aes Sedai]'s stole. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] grabs her and the [foxhead medallion|Foxhead Medallion] goes cold. [Egwene|Egwene alVere] looks puzzled, but [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] and [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] are shocked.[8] He thinks they are playing games and offers to get them out of trouble. He tells them that he knows [Egwene|Egwene alVere] can [Travel|Weaves], so she should just make a gateway back to [Caemlyn]. [Rand|Rand alThor] will send her back to the [Wise Ones|Aiel]. [Rand|Rand alThor] will offer protection to the [Salidar Aes Sedai] if they swear fealty to him. A [novice|novices], [Tabitha|Tabiya], enters and addresses [Egwene|Egwene alVere] as "Mother." [Egwene|Egwene alVere] sends her away to fetch [Sheriam|Sheriam Bayanar]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] stares openmouthed.
