After [Vanin|Chel Vanin] leaves, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and his four men[1] stay in the stable because all the inns are full of [Aes Sedai]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] goes back to the [Little Tower|Salidar], but a prune-faced [Brown Ajah] sister[2] will not let him in. He searches the village but cannot find [Egwene|Egwene alVere], [Elayne|Elayne Trakand], [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara], [Thom|Thom Merrilin], or [Juilin|Juilin Sandar]. That evening the party for the new [Amyrlin|Aes Sedai] continues. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] dances with [Halima|Halima Saranov]. She asks lots of questions and tries to lead. As he leaves, the [foxhead medallion|Foxhead Medallion] goes cold and she looks shocked.[3] A plump, pretty young woman[2] tells him that [Halima|Halima Saranov] is [Delana|Delana Mosalaine]'s secretary. [Birgitte|Birgitte Trahelion] dances with an ugly guy.[4] He winds up standing next to [Myrelle|Myrelle Berengari] who offers to bond him as her [Warder|Warder]. He asks a pretty young woman to dance and is shocked to hear [Siuan|Siuan Sanche]'s voice. He gets another shock when [Leane|Leane Sharif] dances with him and gives him a kiss.

The next morning, [Vanin|Chel Vanin] is back. He reports that [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] will hold. [Olver] came, too. During the day, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] gets five offers of bonding; the first is from [Delana|Delana Mosalaine]. 

The next day, mid-afternoon, [Egwene|Egwene alVere] summons him. She is in her study with [Elayne|Elayne Trakand], [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] and [Aviendha]. She tells him that he is going to [Ebou Dar] with them, then dismisses him.

The next morning [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] prepares to leave. He tells [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] to follow the [Salidar Aes Sedai] if they leave. [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] loans [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] his manservant [Nerim]. [Nerim] is readying [Pips]. [Nalesean|Nalesean Aldiaya] is also going with his manservant [Lopin]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] also has [Vanin|Chel Vanin] and a dozen cavalrymen from the [Band of the Red Hand] with him.[5] [Olver] is also going. He named his horse [Wind|Wind (Horse)]. [Adeleas|Adeleas Namelle] and [Vandene|Vandene Namelle] are there as well as an elderly [Warder|Warder], [Jaem]. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] and [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] arrive. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] apologizes for avoiding [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] ordered him to. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] comments on the letter.[6] [Thom|Thom Merrilin] says a woman might be a friend, an enemy or a lover and you do not know until it is too late.[7] He gives the example of [Aludra|aludra] who chose not to know him when they met again in the menagerie. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] tells him that they will open a gateway to a point five or six days' travel from [Ebou Dar]. There are lots of farms closer and someone might be hurt. [Adeleas|Adeleas Namelle] and [Vandene|Vandene Namelle] are not strong enough to open a gateway. [Egwene|Egwene alVere] arrives with the [Sitters] and [Sheriam|Sheriam Bayanar] and her circle. [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] opens a gateway and they start their journey to [Ebou Dar].

After the gateway closes [Egwene|Egwene alVere] hopes that [Elayne|Elayne Trakand] and [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] can keep [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] out of trouble. She needed to get him away from the [Band of the Red Hand]. She tells the [Sitters] and [Sheriam|Sheriam Bayanar] and her circle that it is time to get on with it. [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde] studies them a minute, then rides off. [Romanda|Romanda Cassin] and [Lelaine|Lelaine Akashi] agree that they really need to get away from him. She hopes [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] left the right instructions for [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde]. [Siuan|Siuan Sanche] left plenty of hints for [Vanin|Chel Vanin] to find that they are preparing to move. They are leaving immediately to join Lord [Bryne|Gareth Bryne].[8]
