[Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] asks about [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] and [Agelmar|Agelmar Jagad] tells them his story. [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] was son of [al'Akir|Akir Mandragoran] and [el'Leanna|Leanna Mandragoran], king and queen of [Malkier]. Less than fifty years ago, his brother, [Lain|Lain Mandragoran], campaigned in the [Blasted Lands] and was killed. His wife, [Breyan|Breyan Mandragoran], had dared him, but then blamed [al'Akir|Akir Mandragoran]. She plotted with [Cowin Gemallan Fairheart|Cowin Gemallan] to take the throne for her son [Isam|Isam Mandragoran]. [Cowin|Cowin Gemallan], a hero of the land, was a [Darkfriend|Darkfriends]. [Cowin|Cowin Gemallan] pulled troops from the border and [Trollocs] invaded. [Cowin|Cowin Gemallan] was captured by young [Jain Charin Farstrider|Jain Charin] and then killed in single combat by [al'Akir|Akir Mandragoran]. [Breyan|Breyan Mandragoran] fled with [Isam|Isam Mandragoran] and they disappeared. [el'Leanna|Leanna Mandragoran] gave her baby [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] a locket and the sword of [Malkier] kings, made with the [One Power],[1] and had bodyguards carry him to [Fal Moran]. The five survivors taught him weapons.[2] [al'Akir|Akir Mandragoran] and [el'Leanna|Leanna Mandragoran] were killed at [Herot's Crossing|Malkier]. The [Trollocs] were finally stopped at the [Stair of Jehaan|Malkier], but [Malkier] was lost.

[Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] and [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] return. [Fain|Padan Fain] was a [Darkfriend|Darkfriends] for forty years. He brought the [Trollocs] to [Emond's Field|Emonds Field]. Three years ago he was brought to [Shayol Ghul] and met [Ba'alzamon|Ishamael] who set him hunting the boys. [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] was still in [Tar Valon] at the time. The [Fade] took [Fain|Padan Fain] on a leash chasing the boys. [Ba'alzamon|Ishamael] drove the [Fades|Fade] into [Shadar Logoth|Aridhol (City)]. He "appeared like a flickering candle, never twice in the same place." [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] fooled the [Fades|Fade], but not [Fain|Padan Fain]. He followed the boys to [Caemlyn], then through the [Ways]. [Machin Shin] caught him, but liked/feared him and left him alone. The [Dark One|Shaitan] impressed part of himself on [Fain|Padan Fain].[3] [Fain|Padan Fain] held back something from [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred].[4] They prepare to go to their rooms.
