[Thom|Thom Merrilin] kills the two men waiting for him. They claimed to be from [Barthanes|Barthanes Damodred] who wanted information on [Rand|Rand alThor]. [Zera] enters having just heard from [Ella] that men were waiting for [Thom|Thom Merrilin]. [Thom|Thom Merrilin] says he has another man to kill. [Zera] tells him [Barthanes|Barthanes Damodred] is dead, torn to pieces in his own bedroom.[1] [Zera] takes a closer look at the two men and says they worked for [Galldrian|Galldrian su Riatin Rie].[2] There is a lot of smoke and [Thom|Thom Merrilin] can see that the graneries are on fire.[3]

[Fain|Padan Fain] is riding into [Falme] with the chest. He left the [Darkfriends] and [Trollocs] at a camp in the hills. All the people he has met are tense and afraid so he thinks he will do well.[4] [Fain|Padan Fain] takes the chest to High Lord [Turak|Turak Aladon]. [Turak|Turak Aladon] opens the chest and is suitably impressed. He keeps the [Horn|Horn of Valere] and the [ruby dagger|Ruby Dagger]. [Fain|Padan Fain] is frustrated, the [Horn|Horn of Valere] was a means to an end, but the [ruby dagger|Ruby Dagger] is part of him. [Fain|Padan Fain] demands the [ruby dagger|Ruby Dagger] and [Turak|Turak Aladon]'s attendant, [Huon|Huan], knocks him down. [Fain|Padan Fain] plans how he will kill him.[5] [Fain|Padan Fain] tells [Turak|Turak Aladon] a story of loyalty to [Hawkwing|Artur Hawkwing]'s blood. He says the banner on the roof was the banner of [Luthair Paendrag|Luthair Paendrag Mondwin], [Hawkwing|Artur Hawkwing]'s son. [Turak|Turak Aladon] talks of the [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] [Empress] and the [Crystal Throne] in the [Court of the Nine Moons|Seandar] in [Seandar]. Her second daughter, [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag],[6] is currently favored for succession. [Turak|Turak Aladon] is of House of Aladon. [Fain|Padan Fain] thinks [Rand|Rand alThor] will be a day or two behind him.[7] He tells [Turak|Turak Aladon] that [Rand|Rand alThor] is a [Darkfriend|Darkfriends] and has [Trollocs]. [Turak|Turak Aladon] says there were no [Trollocs] in [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] but the [Armies of the Night|Seanchan (People)] had other allies. He wonders if a %%ot [grolm]%% could kill a [Trolloc|Trollocs].[8] He dismisses [Fain|Padan Fain] who goes to search for an inn.
