The same night [Rand|Rand alThor] awakens from a nightmare. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] is there in [Egwene|Egwene alVere]'s room. She tells him [Egwene|Egwene alVere] has gone to see [Fain|Padan Fain]. [Rand|Rand alThor] brings up that they did not ask %%blue [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred]%% if it was okay. [Rand|Rand alThor] says [Lan|al'Lan Mandragoran] told him the [Amyrlin|Aes Sedai] is here for him. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] says women, including Lady [Amalisa|Amalisa Jagad], are searching the keep.[1] He says he will leave as soon as the gates are opened. [Perrin|Perrin Aybara] told him there are places in the [Black Hills] and [Caralain Grass] where one can go for days seeing no one.[2] [Rand|Rand alThor] names the [Dark One|ShaiTan] and has an attack of dizziness. 

There is an alarm; the keep is under attack. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve alMeara] tells him [Egwene|Egwene alVere] was going to the dungeon with [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and [Perrin|Perrin Aybara]. [Rand|Rand alThor] rushes out heading for the dungeon. He runs into a [Fade] that smiles and comes toward him,[3] but [Ingtar|Ingtar Shinowa] arrives and tells him to go on. [Rand|Rand alThor] finds the dungeon unlocked and the guards butchered. There is a note on the door written in blood, "We will meet again on [Toman Head]. They proceed into the dungeon and find the other two prisoners insane, [Fain|Padan Fain] gone, and [Egwene|Egwene alVere] and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] unconscious. [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] [Heals|Weaves] [Egwene|Egwene alVere], then examines [Mat|Matrim Cauthon]. She notes angrily that the [ruby dagger|Ruby Dagger] is gone. [Liandrin] asks, "What dagger?"[5] [Ingtar|Ingtar Shinowa] enters with some men who take [Egwene|Egwene alVere] to her room and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] to the [Amyrlin|Aes Sedai]'s chamber. [Ingtar|Ingtar Shinowa] says the [Fade] escaped.[6] The storeroom was looted and the [Horn|Horn of Valere] is gone. [Ronan] is dead. [Ingtar|Ingtar Shinowa] says that [Ronan] and twenty men once held [Jehaan Tower|Malkier] against a thousand [Trollocs]. The [Darkfriends] and [Trollocs] entered through the Dog Gate; someone on the inside murdered the guards and let them in. He says [Agelmar|Agelmar Jagad] just ordered the gates closed. When [Rand|Rand alThor] asks, [Ingtar|Ingtar Shinowa] says he heard nothing about earlier orders. He says [Moiraine|Moiraine Damodred] had [Agelmar|Agelmar Jagad] exempt [Rand|Rand alThor] so now he can leave at any time. He says the choice is up to [Rand|Rand alThor].
