[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] and [Noal|Noal Charin] cross [Mol Hara Square] and [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] notes the statue of Queen [Nariene]. They return to the [Tarasin Palace] and go to the stable gate. The [Tarasin Palace] is now the home of High Lady [Suroth Sabelle Meldarath] as well as Queen [Tylin|Tylin Quintara]. They chat with one of the [Ebou Dari|Ebou Dar] guards, [Surlivan Sarat], and note numerous [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] guards coming and going. There are several dozen %%ot [damane|Seanchan (People)]%% being exercised in the yard by their %%ot [sul'dam|Seanchan (People)]%%. Half are to be [Windfinders|Sea Folk]. One of them is [Teslyn Baradon]. It is a month and a half since the [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)] took [Ebou Dar]. 

[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] takes [Noal|Noal Charin] to his men's quarters and introduces him to [Chel Vanin], [Harnan], [Metwyn], [Gorderan] and [Fergin]. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] brought eight others with him to [Ebou Dar] who are now dead.[1] They tell the [Redarms|Band of the Red Hand] about the %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%%. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] tells his men to leave and find [Talmanes|Talmanes Delovinde]. They are also to take [Olver], [Thom|Thom Merrilin], [Juilin|Juilin Sandar], [Nerim|nerim] and [Lopin|lopin] with them. The [Redarms|Band of the Red Hand] all refuse to leave. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] goes into the palace to get a bath. He runs into [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] and also suggests that he leave. [Juilin|Juilin Sandar] also refuses.[2] 

[Mat|Matrim Cauthon] goes to [Tylin|Tylin Quintara]'s quarters and is stunned when the dice come to a crashing stop. In the room with [Tylin|Tylin Quintara] are [Suroth|Suroth Sabelle Meldarath], [Selucia], [Anath|semirhage] and [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag].[3] [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] knows [Suroth|Suroth Sabelle Meldarath] by sight, but wonders who the others are. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] is angry with [Suroth|Suroth Sabelle Meldarath]. [Suroth|Suroth Sabelle Meldarath] told her the city is safe, but [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] was obviously just accosted. [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] says he just fell. [Anath|semirhage] chews out [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] and [Suroth|Suroth Sabelle Meldarath] looks shocked.[4] [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] inspects [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] thoroughly.[5] She offers to buy [Mat|Matrim Cauthon], but [Tylin|Tylin Quintara] says he is a free man. [Tuon|Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag] invites [Tylin|Tylin Quintara] to look at maps and the women all leave. As [Tylin|Tylin Quintara] passes, [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] tells her about the %%ot [gholam|Gholam]%%. After they leave, a maid comes in and prepares [Mat|Matrim Cauthon] for the pink ribbons.
