Sheriam, Leane, Liandrin and Nynaene are in the room with the Three Arches. The others explain to Nynaene that this is a ter'angreal. They explain that ter'angreals do many things and that they're from before the Breaking. They hint that these things can't be made anymore. Many Aes Sedai have been killed or burned trying to determine what they do. Leane reassures Nynaene that the Aes Sedai know what this one does, which is to bring a novice face-to-face with their greatest fears, but no novice needs to tell anyone what they experience in the arches. To put it simply, novices just need to walk into each arch and then back out again. They then tells Nynaene two things that no novice hears until they're in this room:
They give her one last chance to refuse to go through the arches. Each woman gets a total of three attempts but after that they will be put out of the Tower. Leane admits that she could not do it the first time. Nynaene says that she's ready and Sheriam tells her to remove her dress so that she's only clad in her shift. She's not allowed to bring anything in with her and she won't be allowed to channel. Sheriam, Leane, Liandrin weave to open the arches. Sheriam warns that "the way back will come but once."
Nynaene enters the first arch.
Nynaene goes back to her childhood. Her father, Beerien, is there and asks what she has in her hand, which is crimsonthorn root. He takes her to a nearby stream to rise her hands. Bandits with bows appear and they start shooting at Nynaene and Beerien. They run away and the bandits chase after them. Nynaene's mother, Elnore, appears, armed with a bow, and starts shooting the bandits. This gives the al'Meara's enough time to run away while the rest of the bandits give chase. The al'Meara's manage to get back to their house, lock the door and hide Nynaene in the cellar. Beerien tells Nynaene to be brave and quiet. He says, in Old Tongue, "We shall go into the old land so our children can always hold us and will never be alone."[1] The bandits start breaking in, so Beerien goes upstairs, closes the cellar door, and helps Elnore fight the bandits. Nynaene grabs a meat cleaver when Sheriam's voice is heard saying "the way back will come but once" and an arch doorway appears. After a moment's hesitation, Nynaene goes through and ends up back in the Three Arches room. Liandrin pour waters on her, as a symbolic gesture of cleansing her. Leane heals her. Nynaene asks if it was real but Sheriam says that no one knows.
The Three Arches open again, and again Sheriam warns that "the way back will come but once." Nynaene enters the next arch.
