At the Tarasin Palace, Nynaeve, Elayne, Birgitte and Aviendha have rooms off a common sitting room. Nynaeve wears Merada lace and has one of the twisted ring ter'angreal. Thom and Juilin have rooms in the servants' quarters. Vandene and Adeleas introduce them to Merilille Ceandevin, but then quickly dismiss them so the "real" Aes Sedai can talk. Adeleas and Vandene supposedly intend to look for White Tower runaways.[1] Mat is also a nuisance, but their main task is to find the weather ter'angreal. Birgitte compares Nynaeve's avoidance of Mat to a Cheltan flinching from the tax collector.[2] They all noticed that Ebou Dari typically have dark hair and black eyes.
A servant comes and summons Elayne and Nynaeve to see Queen Tylin. Birgitte and Aviendha decide to go out and do some scouting. As they walk through the palace, they see Jaichim Carridin. The servant tells them the Whitecloaks sent an embassy months ago. Tylin is skeptical that they are Aes Sedai. Nynaeve is twenty-six. Elayne is eighteen. Elayne apologizes for Gareth Bryne's army and says it is headed out of Altara. This puts them in Tylin's good grace. Tylin's Aes Sedai advisor, Cavandra, left to return to the White Tower when it split. She tells them the White Tower sent Joline and Teslyn as an embassy. Nynaeve asks her why she tolerates Carridin. Tylin says her position is precarious so she must listen to all callers. Pedron Niall could invade Altara anytime he wants as he did in the Whitecloak War. She wants her son, Beslan, to succeed her to the Throne of the Winds. He is Elayne's age. Anarina of House Todande was a previous ruler. Since Tylin bared her soul, Elayne tells her about their search for the weather ter'angreal. Tylin says the area they describe sounds like the Rahad. Beslan comes in and introductions are made, then he leaves. Tylin asks if they can explain why the bay is full of Sea Folk ships. As they head back to their apartments, Elayne bets that they will find it in ten days.[3]
