They explain that [ter'angreals|Angreal] serve many purposes, but their creation is a lost art, and many [Aes Sedai] have been killed or burned out studying them. %%blue [Leane|Leane (Show)]%% reassures [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] that this [ter'angreal|Angreal]’s function is known: it forces a novice to confront her greatest fears, though what she experiences remains private, and she need only walk through each arch and return. They then share two rules, kept secret until this moment:

Her father, [Beerien|Beerien (Show)], notices crimsonthorn root in her hand and takes her to a nearby stream to rinse it off. Bandits armed with bows emerge, shooting at [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] and [Beerien|Beerien (Show)]. They flee, pursued by the bandits, until [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)]’s mother, [Elnore|Elnore (Show)], appears with a bow, shooting back to cover their escape. The al’Mearas reach their home, locking the door, and hide [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] in the cellar. [Beerien|Beerien (Show)] urges her to be brave and quiet, saying in the [Old Tongue], "We shall go into the old land so our children can always hold us and will never be alone."[1] As the bandits break in, [Beerien|Beerien (Show)] closes the cellar door and joins [Elnore|Elnore (Show)] upstairs to fight. [Tam|Tam (Show)], lying in the bed beside her, explains that a fever has ravaged the community since her departure. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] opens his shirt, revealing fever blisters on his chest, and spots crimsonthorn root on a nearby table. [Tam|Tam (Show)] reveals that the new Wisdom, [Natti|Natti (Show)], gave it to him. Confronting [Natti|Natti (Show)], [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] learns she’s administering the root to [Tam|Tam (Show)] and others for a painless death. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] insists [Aes Sedai] can heal the fever, but [Natti|Natti (Show)] retorts that they sought help months ago with no response, accusing [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] of abandoning them and declaring the [Two Rivers] is no longer her home.

Abruptly, [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] is flung out of the arch, landing back in the [Three Arches] chamber in the [White Tower] with two bloodstains on her shirt. She admits she doesn’t remember what happened. %%blue [Sheriam|Sheriam (Show)]%% pours water over her in a symbolic cleansing, and %%blue [Leane|Leane (Show)]%% examines her, declaring the blood is not hers. She explains she couldn’t remain at the [Tower|White Tower] and plans to return to the [Two Rivers]. [Lan|Lan (Show)] offers to accompany her, if she’ll have him. She questions his bond with %%blue [Moiraine|Moiraine (Show)]%%, but he doesn’t respond. Faintly, %%blue [Sheriam|Sheriam (Show)]%%’s voice echoes, "The way back will come but once," and an arch doorway appears. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] ignores it, and the doorway vanishes.

In the center of [Atuan’s Mill|Atuans Mill], [Perrin|Perrin (Show)], [Ingtar|Ingtar (Show)], [Masema|Masema (Show)], [Uno|Uno (Show)], [Loial|Loial (Show)], the other Hunters of the [Horn of Valere|Horn], and the town’s residents are surrounded by [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] soldiers in insect-themed armor, gathered before a stepped palanquin. [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] questions their identity and purpose, but [Loial|Loial (Show)] admits he knows nothing of these invaders. The [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] leader, High Lady [Suroth|Suroth (Show)], adorned in a metallic mask covering most of her face, signals with her long, lacquered fingers. A young woman, [Miri|Miri (Show)], wearing a plain dress with a metallic mouthpiece and gorget, steps forward alongside another woman with a painted face and two guards. [Miri|Miri (Show)] moves through the crowd, searching, and points to a girl, whom the guards seize and remove.[1]
[Suroth|Suroth (Show)] gestures again, and [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)], a third figure from the palanquin, addresses the captives. She declares them squatters on land stolen from the [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)], which they now reclaim. As [Miri|Miri (Show)] selects two more girls to be taken away, [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] recounts how [Luthair Paendrag|Luthair Paendrag (Show)]’s fleet crossed the [Aryth Ocean], fulfilling the promised "return." [Uno|Uno (Show)] whispers to [Ingtar|Ingtar (Show)] that they must stop this, but [Ingtar|Ingtar (Show)] cautions they’re outnumbered and unarmed, though [Uno|Uno (Show)] reveals a hidden dagger. [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] proclaims that swearing oaths and bowing to High Lady [Suroth|Suroth (Show)] will absolve their forefathers’ debts.
[Uno|Uno (Show)] stares down one of the [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] soldiers. [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] asks who will be the first to swear the oaths. [Uno|Uno (Show)]'s guard volunteers him and two other [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] soldiers grab him and take him forward. [Uno|Uno (Show)] manages to stab them twice before they disarm him. [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] commands [Uno|Uno (Show)] to avert his eyes and kneel, but he refuses. [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] tells him to bend the knee and swear the oath, but again [Uno|Uno (Show)] refuses, spitting in her direction. High Lady [Suroth|Suroth (Show)] raises all four of her long nails, pauses, and then lowers them. The [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] guards force [Uno|Uno (Show)] to his knees at the base of the palanquin, where a sharp, curved, hornlike object is attached. [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] warns that those who do not swear the oaths will have the oaths sworn for them. All of the [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] soldiers, in unison, shout "To obey. To wait. To Serve." [Uno|Uno (Show)] still refuses to swear. High Lady [Suroth|Suroth (Show)] raises two fingers, pauses , and then lowers them. One of the [Seanchan|Seanchan (Country)] guards slams [Uno|Uno (Show)]'s mouth onto the horn, and then the second slams his foot on the back of [Uno|Uno (Show)]'s shoulders, forcing the horn through [Uno|Uno (Show)]'s head. With that, High Lady [Suroth|Suroth (Show)] slowly, precisely, says "All will bow." Everyone bows with the [Shienarans|Shienar] and [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] last, and while [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] bows to one knee, he stares at [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)]. [Alwhin|Alwhin (Show)] then speaks the oath and everyone repeats it.
! Scene 10 - How Long Will It Take You
[Rand|Rand (Show)] enters the asylum garden, carrying [Logain|Logain (Show)]’s meal. [Logain|Logain (Show)] discerns that [Rand|Rand (Show)] conceals his true identity with dyed, shortened hair. When [Logain|Logain (Show)] inquires about [Yann|Yann (Show)], [Rand|Rand (Show)] reminds him that [Yann|Yann (Show)] suffered an accident and that he will now assume his care. [Logain|Logain (Show)] prods [Rand|Rand (Show)], asking how long it will take him to voice the question he truly intends, before revealing he remembers [Rand|Rand (Show)] from his [Tar Valon] parade, noting his glow as a male [channeler|One Power] was brighter than any he had witnessed. [Logain|Logain (Show)] recalls laughing then, foreseeing that [Rand|Rand (Show)] would shake the world. [Rand|Rand (Show)] finally sits beside [Logain|Logain (Show)] and asks how to control his [channeling|One Power]. [Logain|Logain (Show)] chuckles, demanding a bottle of [Ghealdanin|Ghealdan] red wine as a condition for sharing his knowledge, before walking away.
! Scene 11 - Hunt for the Horn
In the [Foregate|Cairhien (City)], [Rand al'Thor|Rand] observes a [gleeman] entertaining a crowd with a story about the [Hunt for the Horn]. As he moves through the area, he notices individuals being branded with an image of the [Horn of Valere|Horn]. Approaching [Selene|Selene (Show)], [Rand|Rand (Show)] inquires about the activity. She explains that people are gathering to become Hunters for the [Horn of Valere|Horn], a tradition called every few hundred years in [Illian|Illian (City)]. [Selene|Selene (Show)] describes the Horn as a legendary artifact capable of summoning an army of the dead, noting that the Queen of [Cairhien|Cairhien (Country)] has offered half her fortune to whoever retrieves it and returns it to [Cairhien|Cairhien (Country)].
[Rand|Rand (Show)] approaches a table laden with wine bottles, seeking a [Ghealdanin|Ghealdan] red for [Selene|Selene (Show)]. When she questions his choice, he replies that he thinks she enjoys a bit of mystery. [Selene|Selene (Show)] instructs the bartender to cover the first glass for each Hunter but to charge double for subsequent drinks bought for their companions. As [Logain] fills his cup with wine until it overflows, he warns [Rand] that the urge will eventually spill out. [Rand] calls him mad, but [Logain] denies it, claiming the [Aes Sedai] use the idea of madness as a lie to harm men who can channel. [Rand] insists that [Logain] is not the [Dragon], but [Logain] counters, asserting that the blood of [Lews Therin|Lews Therin Telamon (Show)] flows through his own veins and that he can hear his whispers.

She does, notices his open door, and remarks on it. [Min|Min (Show)] suggests they leave, but [Mat|Mat (Show)] hesitates, uncertain of where to go. [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] asks [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)]’s identity, and [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)] replies he stands between [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] and a spike, then explains the caravan’s purpose. [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)] claims [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] is an honored guest of Lady [Suroth|Suroth (Show)], destined for a new life with the [Seanchan|Seanchan (People)].

[Perrin|Perrin (Show)], stunned, asserts that [Rand|Rand (Show)] killed him, prompting [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)] to ask if %%blue [Moiraine|Moiraine (Show)]%% told him so. The wolves draw closer, and [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] hears fighting between them and the guards. A [suldam] and [damane] emerge from another wagon, killing wolves.
[Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)] tells [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] that the more wolf-like he becomes, the more he belongs to [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)], and that he’ll be watching. [Ishamael|Ishamael (Show)] exits the wagon, closing the door. Moments later, [Elyas|Elyas (Show)] bursts through, unlocks [Perrin|Perrin (Show)]’s shackles, and they escape together. [Elyas|Elyas (Show)] points to a wolf, instructing [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] to follow it, which he does.

[Rand|Rand (Show)] awakens later, still channeling, which ignites the roof. [Selene|Selene (Show)] opens the door, concerned for [Rand|Rand (Show)], and they flee the room, watching the inn burn from a distance.

[Egwene|Egwene (Show)] stands in the [Three Arches] room, attempting to open the arches without success. [Elayne|Elayne (Show)] enters and informs her she is not the first to attempt bringing people back, though none have succeeded, adding that it requires more than one [Aes Sedai]. [Egwene|Egwene (Show)] tells [Elayne|Elayne (Show)] to help or leave, but [Elayne|Elayne (Show)] refuses. [Egwene|Egwene (Show)] tries again, prompting [Elayne|Elayne (Show)] to warn that she risks injury, death, or expulsion by the sisters if caught. [Elayne|Elayne (Show)] recounts [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)]’s journey to the [Tower|White Tower], noting that many believed she died but she survived, driven by concern for [Egwene|Egwene (Show)]. [Elayne|Elayne (Show)] asks if [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] would want [Egwene|Egwene (Show)] to jeopardize her future this way. [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] plays chase with [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)], who carries a sword. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] asks if [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] made it, but [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)] says [Lan|Lan (Show)] can teach her to use it. [Mat|Mat (Show)], finely dressed, arrives on horseback and dismounts. They exchange greetings, and [Mat|Mat (Show)] delivers a letter from [Egwene|Egwene (Show)] to [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)].
As evening falls, [Mat|Mat (Show)] and [Perrin|Perrin (Show)] play with [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)] while [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] and [Lan|Lan (Show)] prepare dinner. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] shares that the letter reports [Egwene|Egwene (Show)] and other [Greens|Green Ajah] are heading north due to [Trollocs] invading [Saldaea]. [Lan|Lan (Show)] asks [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] if she regrets leaving the [Tower|White Tower], but she does not answer. A [Trolloc] smashes through the door, forcing [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] and [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)] to retreat to the cellar. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] instructs [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)] to stay quiet downstairs, grabs an axe, and returns upstairs. The [Trolloc] inside is dead, but fighting has moved outside, where more [Trollocs] attack. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] exits the house, kills a [Trolloc], and sees [Mat|Mat (Show)] lying dead. A thrown axe kills [Perrin|Perrin (Show)], and three [Trollocs] slay [Lan|Lan (Show)]. [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] [channels|One Power], killing the remaining [Trollocs]. While crying over [Lan|Lan (Show)], she hears [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)] call out. [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)] points to an arch, asking what it is. Recognizing it, [Nynaeve|Nynaeve (Show)] sees more [Trollocs] approaching, takes [Elnore Jr|Elnore Jr (Show)], and steps through the arch. She emerges alone, screaming and crying. [Egwene|Egwene (Show)] and [Elayne|Elayne (Show)], awakened from sleep, rush to comfort her.
