Scene 2 - What Is it?#

Sheriam, Leane, Liandrin and Nynaeve are in the room with the Three Arches. The others explain to Nynaeve that this is a ter'angreal. They explain that ter'angreals do many things and that they're from before the Breaking. They hint that these things can't be made anymore. Many Aes Sedai have been killed or burned trying to determine what they do. Leane reassures Nynaeve that the Aes Sedai know what this one does, which is to bring a novice face-to-face with their greatest fears, but no novice needs to tell anyone what they experience in the arches. To put it simply, novices just need to walk into each arch and then back out again. They then tells Nynaeve two things that no novice hears until they're in this room:
  1. Once you start, you must continue to the end or otherwise they will be put out of the Tower with enough money for a year, and never be allowed back.
  2. "To seek, to strive, is to know danger." and there is the possibility of danger. Some women have never returned.

They give her one last chance to refuse to go through the arches. Each woman gets a total of three attempts but after that they will be put out of the Tower. Leane admits that she could not do it the first time. Nynaeve says that she's ready and Sheriam tells her to remove her dress so that she's only clad in her shift. She's not allowed to bring anything in with her and she won't be allowed to channel. Sheriam, Leane, Liandrin weave to open the arches. Sheriam warns that "the way back will come but once."

Nynaeve enters the first arch.

Scene 3 - What Was#

Nynaeve goes back to her childhood. Her father, Beerien, is there and asks what she has in her hand, which is crimsonthorn root. He takes her to a nearby stream to rise her hands. Bandits with bows appear and they start shooting at Nynaeve and Beerien. They run away and the bandits chase after them. Nynaeve's mother, Elnore, appears, armed with a bow, and starts shooting the bandits. This gives the al'Meara's enough time to run away while the rest of the bandits give chase. The al'Meara's manage to get back to their house, lock the door and hide Nynaeve in the cellar. Beerien tells Nynaeve to be brave and quiet. He says, in Old Tongue, "We shall go into the old land so our children can always hold us and will never be alone."[1] The bandits start breaking in, so Beerien goes upstairs, closes the cellar door, and helps Elnore fight the bandits. Nynaeve grabs a meat cleaver when Sheriam's voice is heard saying "the way back will come but once" and an arch doorway appears. After a moment's hesitation, Nynaeve goes through and ends up back in the Three Arches room. Liandrin pours water on her, as a symbolic gesture of cleansing her. Leane heals her. Nynaeve asks if it was real but Sheriam says that no one knows.

The Three Arches open again, and again Sheriam warns that "the way back will come but once." Nynaeve enters the next arch.

Scene 4 - What Is#

Nynaeve wakes up on a bed in the Two Rivers. She's in a room (in the Winespring Inn?) with many beds holding sick people. Tam is in the bed next to her and he explains how a fever spread through the community after she left. She opens his shirt to find fever blisters on his chest and then she sees crimsonthorn root on a table nearby. Tam tells her that the new Wisdom, Natti, gave them to him. She approaches Natti and Natti says she's giving Tam and the others the root because it's a painless death. Nynaeve says that Aes Sedai can health this, but Natti says that they've asked for help months ago but got no response. Natti accuses Nynaeve of abandoning them and that the Two Rivers is no longer her home.

Nynaeve goes back to Tam, telling him that he's going to be fine, but he knows the truth and asks her stay with him until the herbs "have done their work." Sheriam's voice is heard saying "the way back will come but once" and an arch doorway appears. Despite Tam asking Nynaeve to stay, Nynaeve goes through and ends up back in the Three Arches room. Liandrin again pours water on her. Nynaeve pleads with them to go to the Two Rivers because of the plague, but Liandrin reminds her that she must continue going through the arches.

The Three Arches open again, and again Sheriam warns that "the way back will come but once." Nynaeve enters the next arch.

Scene 5 - What Might Be#

It's a scene of madness. Screaming voices, images of Nynaeve floating around in space wearing a red dress, with hands over her ears, visions of Lan speaking the words from scene 8 of Episode 108 and then Nynaeve being flung out of the arches with two bloodstains on her shirt. Nynaeve says she doesn't remember what happened. Sheriam pours water on her. Leane checks Nynaeve over and declares that the blood is not hers.Nynaeve opens her hand to discover that she's holding on to Lan's hadori. Sheriam announces that Nynaeve is now Accepted and gives her an Aes Sedai ring, without the stone in it, but Nynaeve rejects it, saying that if the point of the tests is to trust the Tower over everything else, then she rejects it. As Nynaeve leaves the room, Liandrin warns her that if she leaves, then she will never be allowed to return. Nynaeve continues on out.

Back in Nynaeve's room, she's packing her things. Egwene comes in asking her not to go, but Nynaeve tells her that she came to the Tower for Egwene, but she doesn't need Nynaeve anymore and will live up to the true meaning of an Aes Sedai ("servants of all").
