Scene 3 - Torches in the Distance#

It's night, the scene is outside of a star-shaped building[1]. A little girl, dressed like a Tinker, is playing out front of the building. There are various artifacts in the area, including one with an Aes Sedai symbol. At the treeline, there are three torchlights visible and approaching. As they get closer, we can see that they are being held by Trollocs. They roar and start running towards the girl. The girl is scared and runs inside the building, slamming the door behind her.

Scene 4 - Darkfriend Social#

The girl runs into a room and under a table at which twelve people are sitting with covered faces. A male voice is speaking to the others at the table. The girl looks at the seated people and sees a Seanchan, someone with a black Aes Sedai ring, a Shienaran, and a Tinker. The man says "Where is he now, the one who walks the world, the one who was and will be, but is not yet the Dragon, Rand al'Thor? He released me at the Eye of the World and thinks he can hide. He cannot." A woman asks if they are to kill him, but the man says that Rand could be turned to their use. The girl calls out to her mother and Ishamael comes beneath the table to talk to the girl. He asks her if there's a monster outside. She acknowledges that, and he takes her to go outside with him. He mentions that people call him a Forsaken. As they are walking, Padan Fain reveals himself to be one of those sitting at the table.

Scene 5 - Just Hungry?#

Ishamael and the girl walk back outside where the three Trollocs are standing. They do not attack. He convinces the girl that the Trollocs aren't evil but maybe just hungry. He picks her up and approaches one of the Trollocs and touches its face. The Trolloc leans into his hand. The girl then tries touching the Trolloc and it leans into her hand as well. The girl giggles.

Scene 7 - Not for Pai Mei#

At Tifan's Well, Moiraine carries two buckets of water across her shoulders using a stick. She is not wearing her usual blue clothes. She carries the buckets uphill to a building and empties them into a bath. She washes her clothes in the bath and then takes a bath. She uses the same motion to heat the water when she and Lan were in a bath back in the Two Rivers, but she can't heat the water this time. She starts to cry.

Scene 8 - Sword Practice#

Lan practices his sword forms at Tifan's Well. He seems to have problems concentrating. He sees a rider approaching the village.

Scene 9 - Move to the Left a Little#

Outside a building, Adeleas is lounging on a couch with Tomas sitting nearby. Verin comes in and blocks Adeleas's view of Lan and asks Verin to move a little to the left. Lan tells them a rider is coming and then we see Bayle riding past in the background. Adeleas assumes it's another visitor for Moiraine and Verin says that would make 20. Moiraine is not telling anyone who her visitors are.

Scene 10 - An Illianer#

Lan knocks on the door to Moiraine room then comes in. He says that she has another visitor, this one from Illian. She tells Lan to send him in, which he does and Bayle Domon enters and Moiraine tells Lan to leave and shut the door.

Scene 11 - Being a Novice#

Egwene, dressed in novice white, is cleaning Siuan's room and takes a long look at Siuan's Amyrlin dress.[2] Next, she is walking along a outer walkway on the Tower when Leane wordlessly drops a cup into Egwene's bucket and keeps walking. Later, while cleaning a plate, Egwene sees Alanna being intimate with her two Warders, Maksim and Ihvon. Egwene gets embarrassed and quickly leaves, but not before Alanna sees her. Later, Egwene passes by the training grounds, where men are practicing their swordwork and women are watching them. She stops momentarily to watch them. She eventually ends up in the kitchen.

Scene 12 - Clean Water#

Egwene and Nynaeve talk for a bit about being a novice before Alanna enters the kitchen. The novices automatically start removing the buckets from the tabletop and putting them under the table, but Alanna tells Egwene to leave her bucket. She starts a lesson on channeling, talking about the five threads of the One Power. Alanna takes several glasses, dunks them in the dirty bucket water and puts them on the table. She shows the novices how to clean the water with the One Power and then drinks the water in her glass. No novice is allowed to leave until they drink the water from their glass. Egwene is not using her hands to do the weaves. Nynaeve doesn't embrace the One Power. Alanna tries to help her, but Nynaeve gets frustrated. Alanna motions for the other novices to leave. Alanna talks to Nynaeve about how much power she and Egwene have, but Nynaeve says that no one should have that much power. Alanna notes that Nynaeve and Egwene have been in the White Tower for five months, but Nynaeve hasn't ever channeled. Alanna reiterates that no one leaves without drinking their glass of water, so in rebellion, Nynaeve drinks her glass of dirty water and leaves.

Scene 13 - Novice Report#

In a courtyard, several Aes Sedai meet to discuss the novices. Sheriam, the Mistress of Novices, is leading the conversation. Alanna says that Egwene needs to loosen up a bit and Nynaeve is still blocked. Liandrin suggests that Nynaeve might need a more effective teacher. Alanna says that all who are allowed to try, have tried, implying that Liandrin is forbidden to try. Liandrin asks for an exception in this case, but Sheriam reminds her that a novice died in her care. Sheriam notes that they can't afford any losses and that the White Tower used to be full, but now fewer girls come to the Tower and they have lesser power. Liandrin notes that the world is becoming more dangerous, pointing out the Hunt for the Horn is ongoing, there's more Trolloc raids and another false Dragon has declared himself in Saldaea. Joiya has heard that this one is more powerful than Logain. Liandrin asks permission just to talk with her. Sheriam agrees to allow her to talk to Nynaeve and then ends the meeting. Alanna tells Sheriam that this is a mistake, but Liandrin asks her who's ever been hurt by a little talk.

Scene 14 - Letters and a New Tracker#

In Arad Doman, Perrin is writing letters to Nynaeve and Egwene. Loial tells him it's time to go. The Hunt for the Horn of Valere continues.

Scene 15 - A Signal Fire#

Perrin, Lord Ingtar, Uno, Masema and the others meet with the tracker, Elyas, who is also a "sniffer" and has yellow eyes. Ingtar acknowledges Elyas. Uno tells Elyas to put out the fire before Padan Fain sees it. Elyas say the fire is not his. He glances at Perrin and then starts leading them down to the fire.

Scene 16 - A Vision#

They arrive at a campfire. Many Tinkers have been killed. Perrin's eyes turn golden and he sees a vision of Padan Fain attacking a woman and little girl getting away. Elyas says there was a child that got away.

The group continues and comes across a dead dog and Shienaren. The Shienaren is wearing the same symbol as seen on one of the meeting attendees in the Darkfriend Social. The dog was apparently protecting the girl. Loial says that the dead Shienaren was one of those who helped Padan Fain enter Fal Dara.

Ingtar says that they shall bury the bodies and continue following in the morning.

Scene 17 - Broken Heartstone#

Bayle and Moiraine are still bargaining. He's shown her a rock from before the Breaking, but she questions whether that is true. He says that the Sea Folk are the best at bargaining and that she doesn't want that rock. He then shows her a piece of broken Cuendillar, noting that its made from the One Power and its defining trait is that it can't be broken.

Scene 18 - Afraid of a Little Silence?#

Moiraine notices that there's writing on the Cuendillar and Bayle says that there was a whole poem written in blood on the moon dial in Old Tongue. He happens to have a copy of the poem. He offers 50 marks for the stone and one mark for the poem. She pulls out a one mark coin, gives it to him and then takes the poem, saying that's all she needs.

Moiraine asked about the men who are following him and he says he could never get a glimpse of their faces because their hoods covered their faces. She tells him to get back on his boat, the Spray, go back to Illian and then travel out to sea as far and fast as he can. He objects, saying that his boat is meant for river travel, not sea travel. She gives him 10 marks for provisions. After he leaves, she reads the poem.

Scene 20 - Sword Practice#

Nynaeve is practicing swordwork with Ihvon and Maksim. She expresses doubt about the White Tower. Ihvon and Maksim talk about their experiences when they first got to the Tower and how the only thing that kept them going was remembering what brought them there in the first place. Nynaeve is in her room trying to clean the water in her cup, but failing. Liandrin comes in through the open door and closes it behind her. She says that she's been watching Nynaeve and that she is a disappointment. Nynaeve says she's learned more from the Warders than from the Aes Sedai. Liandrin shows how weak she thinks the Warders are by conjuring a sword of Air, but then saying that she wants to win any fight and then channels a weave that pushes Nynaeve back against the wall. Liandrin goes on to describe her loathing of Warders. Finally, in a rage, Nynaeve uses the same weave to push Liandrin back against a wall, but then Liandrin shields Nynaeve, explaining how Nynaeve can feel it but can't touch it. Liandrin's goal is to see Nynaeve so powerful that no one can control her. Liandrin releases the shield and leaves the room.

Scene 24 - A Rage Inside#

Uno and the others are burying the dead, while Elyas buries the dog. Perrin asks Ingtar why he is giving the traitor a proper burial. Ingtar says it costs him nothing to do so, and even if he was angry, revenge is not worth it because if every Shienaren sought revenge, then there's be no more Shienarens left.

Perrin remembers Padan Fain and speaks about the rage growing within him. Ingtar says that maybe Perrin should ask why Fain did those things before killing him.

Scene 25 - Dinner Plans#

Lan is angry at Moiraine for what he thinks she's doing to him.

She says she'll have her dinner upstairs tonight and he tells her to make it herself and eat it wherever she wants.

Scene 27 - No Mention of Mat#

Liandrin and Mat are in a room in the Tower. Liandrin is reading the letter from Perrin to everyone but leaves off any mention of Mat and instead tells him that the letter had no mention of him. She brings up that the last dozen letters[3] didn't mention him either and suggests that it's because he abandoned them.

He questions what she wants from him, noting that he hasn't touched the Ruby Dagger in six months and that he's no harm to anyone. Liandrin leaves the room, locking it behind her.

Egwene is crying because she misses Rand so much. Nynaeve lets her know that she's not leaving the Tower.

Mat lowers a set of drawers to the floor and starts digging through the bricks on the wall.

Nynaeve puts a Bel Tine lantern on the window sill.

Perrin watches his Bel Tine lantern drift away, with tears in his eyes.

Scene 32 - Want Us To Wait?#

Back at Tifan's Well, Adeleas, Verin, Tomas and Lan are sitting down for dinner. Lan has set a plate for Moiraine. Tomas asks Lan if he wants everyone to wait for Moiraine and Lan says yes, sure that tonight will be the night. A discussion ensues about Moiraine and Lan. The women talk about how being cut off from the One Power feels like an assault and that most women don't recover from it. Most women die, but Moiraine is fighting it every day. Tomas says perhaps it's time for Lan to be quiet and just listen. Lan says that that's probably the first time anyone's asked him to be quiet.

Lan takes Moiraine's meal up to her, but she's not in her room.

Scene 33 - Riding Off#

Moiraine mounts her horse and rides off. She doesn't get far before she's confronted by a Fade. Her horse rears, throwing her off, and then gallops away. She manages to surprise the Fade and stab it, and it falls, but when she turns around, she's stabbed by a second Fade and falls to the ground. She crawls back a bit, but the Fade raises its sword, preparing to stab her, when Lan leaps in and slices the Fade twice, killing it. Two more Fades appear and Lan fights them. He kills one but the other one takes him down. Moiraine tries to channel, but fails. Not far away, Verin yells for them to cover their ears. Verin lights Tomas's blade on fire and he kills the remaining Fade.

Lan demands that Moiraine tell him what she's hiding from him.
