Nynaeve, Elayne, Thom, and Juilin are camped one mile away from Mardecin. They are bound for Tar Valon with two ter'angreal[1] recovered from the Black Ajah and one of the seals to the Dark One's prison. Thom heads into town for supplies. Nynaeve still worries about Rand, Mat, Perrin and Egwene. The conversation turns to Tanchico and Amathera. Juilin comments that he thinks she is a pretty woman.[2] Nynaeve and Elayne talk about Moghedien and the Black Ajah. They think Liandrin and the others surely escaped Tanchico.[3]
When Thom returns, he reports that Pedron Niall has many Whitecloaks returning to Amador. Nynaeve and Elayne go for a walk to the village. Nynaeve brings up Elayne's behavior towards Thom. Elayne is offended and retorts that her father was Taringail Damodred. Nynaeve brings up Rand and they discuss Egwene's report that Aviendha is keeping an eye on him. Elayne brings up Min's viewing that she will have to share Rand. This makes Nynaeve remember how she shares Lan with Moiraine. Elayne recalls one of many sayings she learned from Lini.
In Mardecin, Nynaeve spots a Yellow Ajah emergency signal outside a seamstress' shop, an upside-down bouquet of yellow flowers tied with yellow ribbon. Nynaeve recalls the code signals she learned from Shemerin in the White Tower. They go inside and Nynaeve introduces herself as a Yellow sister to the owner, Ronde Macura. She tells her assistant, Luci, to make them some tea. Nynaeve notes a dress with a collar of frothy Solinde lace. They all go to the kitchen and talk over tea. Ronde Macura gives Elayne and Nynaeve a message: "All sisters are welcome to return to the White Tower. The Tower must be whole and strong." The message came about a month ago. Feeling woozy, Nynaeve realizes she has been drugged. Then she passes out.[4]
