[Rand] is cleaning up the debris from the burned-down inn. [Selene] takes the blame for the fire, saying she forgot to blow out the candles.
She tells [Rand] that she's having the inn rebuilt, which means she has time to get away for a while and stay at her family's cabin near
[Kinslayer's Dagger|Kinslayers Dagger]. She invites [Rand] to come with her, but [Rand] declines, stating that he's not good company right now.
She says that since the fire drove off all the other tenants, he'll have the place to himself, if he wants that.
[Rand] cleans up debris from the burned-down inn in [Cairhien|Cairhien (City)]. [Selene] takes responsibility for the fire, admitting she forgot to blow out the candles, and mentions she’s having the inn rebuilt, giving her time to stay at her family’s cabin near [Kinslayer's Dagger|Kinslayers Dagger]. She invites [Rand] to join her, but he declines, saying he’s not good company right now. [Selene] notes that the fire drove off the other tenants, leaving [Rand] the place to himself if he prefers solitude[8].

She asks if he's started training [Rand], but he doesn't answer, assuming that she sent [Rand] as well.
She asks him where [Rand] is staying but he refuses to say and knocks a glass of wine from her hand.
She says that she can give him what he really wants, and then produces a knife, saying that if he helps her, she'll give him the knife.
She asks again where [Rand] is staying and this time he tells her that [Rand] is staying at the [Crescent Inn].
He tells her that [Rand] has as much power as he did, but fears it, hates it, so he can't control it.
She tells him to teach [Rand] everything he knows about [channelling] and once she's satisfied with [Rand]'s progress, she'll give him the knife.
She then leaves.
